This is a true 1962 Austin Pup. We did some work on it many years ago, and it has a special place in our hearts as one of our first refresh restorations, as well as a critical stepping stone to our Goodguys award collection. It is somewhere in the middle of a factory restoration and a restomod. Currently located in Washington, this mini has a clean title and only 93,000 Actual Miles.
This Pup has an interesting history. First off, it is an authentic North American export, which is why it is in LHD. This is quite hard to find as far as Pickup or Van models are concerned. It was sold in New Jersey and used by a flower shop until it developed "engine troubles" and was scrapped in 1969. There it sat until someone saved it, and did some body work and got it mostly together again. Given part scarcity at the time and the body's condition, much had to be hand made. The tailgate was made to be much thicker with wood internals and covered in a metal skin, and the rear valance was moulded onto the quarters. The bumper is also part of the body shell, and it is not a fiberglass addition. This is where it was passed around at until we had a go at it, and were able to get it on the road with a whole new look and feel.
Freshly painted in it's original Tweed Grey with some additional clear coat to really bring out the shine, this pup really looks like it should. The bed was bedlined black with some stick on chrome trim, along with black bedliner sprayed in the wheel arches and onto the underside and sills. Currently the truck is fitted with OEM style steel wheels painted white and fitted with baby moon hubcaps installed by the new owner in place of the more custom looking Dunlop wheels. All of the glass is in perfect condition and lightly tinted, along with a new windscreen and all of the seals are renewed. The bed in surrounded with snaps for a cover, and it still has the attachments for a canvas top fitted. Almost all of the chrome has been re-chromed or replaced too.
Inside was where you can really a level of detail. It is greatly upgraded from a standard pup's interior. Plush recovered seats, new grey carpeting, a deluxe binnacle to house oil pressure and temp gauges, along with a new parcel shelf and even a custom radio console to keep the interior looking classy, but still allow a radio to be within reach. Speakers are hidden behind the driver's seat as well.
The original wiring was all ripped out and we installed a custom hand built loom to suit this particular mini. So no worrying about Lucas! Also it was converted to Negative ground. Custom switches were fitted as well, to change lighting and also for use in the interior lamps.
The engine is an 848cc A series fed by a small HS2 carburetor. This engine is still running points and a standard intake and exhaust system, so it has room to grow if you wanted to hotrod it. Stopping power comes from all new drum brakes with new hoses as well.
Don't miss your chance to get this very hard to find mini!
